Angel on My Shoulder (Devil on My Back)
"This was the most recent song that I wrote, and it barely made it onto the CD since I showed up at the studio with an extremely rough recording of the tune and the lyrics scribbled on a steno pad. I made the final lyric decisions in the vocal booth!"

Nothing is Easy Anymore
"My co-writer Brian came to me with the idea for this song and needed a "girl's" perspective to finish it. Obviously, he'd written it from a guy's point of view, and so I got out my pen and changed it to a woman's, naturally. This song offers a glimpse into the freshest stages of relational 'brokenness,' and how everything intentional - or unintentional - seems to hinge upon the memory of the past."

Moonshine
"Even though I grew up in the Northwest, we all still had a sort of southern pride when it came to our dirt-biking, camping, fishing, 4-wheeling and moonlight truck rides. This song is the only one on the record that really pays homage to my roots. I did grow up in
a community of milk farmers and loggers."

Pennies in the Ocean
"At the time I wrote this song I was hitting the proverbial musical ceiling and found myself completely overwhelmed by the amount of competition surrounding me. I wrote it as a tribute to all of us who have dreams, but have to live day to day with the knowledge that we aren't the only ones waiting for our true selves to emerge.”

Leavin' Memphis
"Brian Oaks and I wrote this song over the course of several different writing sessions. The last one was in a hotel room in Nashville, where all the pieces fell into place. Since the story was so intricate and had so much potential, it took a long time to sew together. It's the ultimate 'white trash' love song."

Angel on Fire
"I am huge bluegrass fan, and when I sat down to write this, I wanted to try to write my own bluegrass tune. Brian Oaks had this hooky little riff, and the song tumbled out in a few minutes. Despite the upbeat feel of the song, it has an underlining warning message for those that toe the line between their exes and their future."

Good Fight
"I wrote this song in light of my own relationship, and how I felt that 'good' fighting was constructive. I had a friend tell me once that she and her husband NEVER fought, and I couldn't help but feel horrible for her. Communication isn't about agreeing with everything someone else has to say; it’s about truly being heard and truly listening."

Shameless Fool
"This is one of the oldest songs on the record. I wrote it after someone extremely close to me filed for divorce. After a lifetime of trusting someone, she was betrayed and left heartbroken. I was so devastated for her, but couldn't really begin to understand what she and her family might be going through until I put myself in her position."

Perfect Storm
"I once had someone tell me that my songs were all sad. It's funny, because I think that this record is a collection of some of the more happy-sounding music I've written. 'Perfect Storm' is an example of a happy tune meeting my standard melancholy lyrics."

Belle Meade
"Shortly after moving to Nashville, I became enthralled with an area called Belle Meade. This ‘enclave’ has some of the most amazingly rich and immaculate houses in the nation, but something about the rivers and the grandiosity of everything I saw made it feel more like a movie set than reality. The lawns and gardens seemed too perfect, the cars too luxurious, and the faces too stern. Not knowing then what I know now (that Belle Meade is the Beverly Hills of Nashville), the area made me sad. To this day, I don't know why it made such an impact on me, but I wrote this song about regret and personal anguish, because perception is only a half-truth."

Speechless
"This is my favorite song on the record. I wrote it out of the absolute nothingness that is art. There is nothing that hasn't been thought, and there is nothing that hasn't been said.
This is a song of absolute surrender, knowing that I have nothing within me that is original in thought - just original in perspective. It’s a song about saying nothing and everything at the same time."

Lonely Tonight
"This song was written and recorded in Seattle. 'Lonely Tonight' is so simple, yet it chokes me up sometimes when I sing it. It takes me back home when I hear the recording. This song will always be special to me, because it is accidentally haunting and purposely truthful.”
